Valve World
2000: Mr. Barrie Kirkman (left), Engineering Technology
Manager, BP, presents the EFV certificate to Neil Wagstaff,
Managing Director, Heaton Valves, and Mike Zivic, Vice
President - International Sales, Velan |
British Petroleum, one of the world's
leading providers of energy and petrochemicals, continues
its pioneering work towards significantly reducing fugitive
emissions of hydrocarbons from leaking valves. Heaton
Valves, has had a successful trading partnership with
BP in the United Kingdom for many years, but in late 1998,
BP realized that the Velan product combined with the Heaton
Valves distribution network could be of great benefit
to them. Early 1999 saw the start of a detailed testing program
of Velan valves fitted with Garlock EVSP 9000 (simplified)
gland packing and Klinger gaskets. Gland packings were carefully
installed according to standard procedures and the valves
were tested with Helium to meet BP's specifications. All Velan
valves tested, including those from stock and those in production,
complied fully to the BP "Environmentally Friendly Valve"
(EFV) specification, which requires that 95% of tested valves
show 0ppm and the remaining 5% show no more than 50ppm. The
test results, plant audits, and commercial evaluation led
to Heaton Valves
being awarded an EFV agreement to supply Velan products to
BP. The EFV certificate refers to Velan valves produced in
North America, Portugal, and Korea. Neil Wagstaff, Sales and
Marketing Director at Heaton
Valves commented: "One of the key features in the
success of this agreement has been the willingness of all
companies to work together as a team. We are delighted to
be the only company in UK to hold a technical/commercial certificate
for the supply of Velan cast steel EFV valves to BP."
