 Many
of the pipe, valve and fitting industry's top professionals
were in Maastricht, Netherlands in November for the Valve
World 2002 Conference and Expo. As a headline sponsor of the
show, Velan was intimately involved in most areas of the event,
with several speakers from Velan presenting on such topics
as the future of the industry, valve reliability, actuation
and control, and valve application and selection. Photos and

 Although
Velan was among the first North American valve manufacturers
to be awarded PED approval from Bureau Veritas, which was
meant to harmonize technical requirements for pressure vessels
within the EU, Germany has additional, stringent regulations.
Velan Portugal, Velan's Portuguese division, has now earned
PED approval from TUV, a necessity for supplying cast steel
valves to the demanding German market.

 Velan's
French division has produced a 42" butt weld end side-entry
butterfly valve for LNG service—the largest valve of
this style ever manufactured anywhere. The 42" valve
is part of a shipment of about 80 stainless steel cryogenic
butterfly valves to a new LNG terminal in Bilbao, Spain. Visit

 On
October 30 of last year, 15 shop foremen from Velan's Montreal
plants started their first session of a new leadership training
program. Run by Jacques Besner, CRHA, the four session seminar
entitled "The Coach of a Winning Team" aimed to
develop the participants' management skills. Regular employee
training remains a key component of Velan's Total Quality
Program.
