 The
adjacent photo shows one of eleven fully automated and DCS
controlled Velan 24-inch by 24-inch batch digester capping
valves. The lower flange was custom cast and machined to fit
the customer's digesters' top flanges. The valves were supplied
complete with automatic actuator jamming and a safety interlock
system that prevents accidental opening while the valve is
at pressure. The safety interlock system also includes redundant
pressure monitoring and controls interlock that prevents valve
opening until pressure in the digester is at 1 psig or less.
During start-up a number of valves were closed on a column
of chips as a result of accidental over fill and they continued
to operate and shut off tightly.
