R&D Engineer

Job Description

Passionate about prototype development and new technologies, the R&D Engineer applies a solid knowledge of project management & mechanical engineering principles to develop new solutions and to evaluate the merits and risks of alternatives. He will work effectively with colleagues to ensure that engineering decisions which span multiple disciplines are balanced and optimized for the overall performance, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness of the product and technology.

Global responsibilities:
Lead R&D projects, including planning, tracking, scope, execution, and reporting - Ensure proper project definition including technical specification
Prepare development plan, considering existing solutions, competitors and the latest developments in materials & processes
Present project proposals, project updates, and final results
Synchronize activity with other Engineering groups including overseas
Write reports, engineering instructions and design standards to document and transmit final results.

Specific responsibilities:

Product Development and Technology:
Design prototype using engineering calculations,
Perform structural, fluid, and thermal analysis using ANSYS Workbench,
Ensure prototypes meet industry codes, standards, and accepted engineering practices

R&D laboratory:
Prepare Design of experiment to test prototypes
Plan the required material and equipment
Supervise laboratory technicians during testing


Bachelor or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent

Product Development and Technology: 5+ year experience in design, product development and manufacturing
R&D laboratory: 5+ year experience in experimental testing
5 to 10 years of experience in an engineering context

Knowledge of valves, preferably quarter-turn
Product and technology development including design, analytical/numerical validation, experimental qualification of valves or pressure vessels
Project, management, an asset
Stage-Gate® process and ideation methodologies, an asset
Fluency using 3D solid modeling CAD systems and drawing preparation,
Knowledge and experience using engineering and design analytical software (ANSYS, CFX, Pro/Mechanica, MathCAD, etc.),
Solid understanding of machining and assembly methods and processes

Excellent interpersonal skills in areas such as teamwork, facilitation and negotiation
Excellent communication to all levels of the company and ability to communicate with both technical and business stakeholders
Excellent planning, managing & measuring and organizational skills
Strong leadership, action oriented, decision making skills
Excellent analytical and technical skills
